CEO
The first CEO was held in 2020 by the initiative of high-school student Andy Wei. It also would not have been possible without founding Contest Committee members Vivian Zhang and Guilherme Pita and founding Organizing Committee members Devlyn Sun, Elizabeth Zhu, and Peter Zheng.
The 2020 CEO garnered 236 signups from students in 4 provinces attending 123 different schools. See the 2020 contest questions, solutions, and results. Team Canada comprised Andy Wei, Zhening Li, Richard Yang, Kevin Wang, and Theodore Liu.
The 2021 CEO had 275 signups. See the 2021 questions, answers, and results.
The 2022 CEO was conducted in two rounds. See 2022 Round 1 questions and answers, Round 2 questions, and the final results. Round 2 solutions will not be published.
The 2023 CEO was conducted in two rounds. See 2023 Round 1 questions and answers, Round 2 questions, and the final results. Round 2 solutions will not be published. The results of the 2023 CEBCC, conducted by our partner, Lorvale Academy, are available here.
The 2024 CEO was conducted in two rounds. See 2024 Round 1 questions and answers, Round 2 questions, and the final results. Round 2 solutions will not be published.
The 2025 CEO was conducted in two rounds. See 2025 Round 1 questions and answers. This year is the first time Round 2 is conducted in person. Round 2 is currently underway (scheduled for April 8) and its questions will be posted at a later day. Round 2 solutions will not be published. This year the award system has changed: there will be no more awards based on the results of Round 1 except for being named the National Finalist. National finals recognition will include gold, silver, and bronze medal awards as well as an honorable mention award. The honorable mention award at the Finals is a more valuable distinction than any honor roll awards in previous years.
IEO
With a mission to promote interest in economics among high school students, the IEO was launched in 2018 with the support of Nobel-Prize winner Eric Maskin as the 13th international science olympiad. First held in Moscow with competitors from 13 countries, the IEO has now hosted competitors from more than 50 countries, establishing itself as the most prestigious high-school economics competition in the world. At the IEO, students not only compete in exciting, challenging rounds but also have the opportunity to participate in networking sessions, cultural exchanges, guest lectures, and workshops while meeting like-minded students from around the world.
Canada’s first delegation to the IEO in 2020 had phenomenal results, with all 5 students winning an individual medal and Canada placing 6th overall out of 29 countries. Richard Yang and Andy Wei won gold medals, Zhening Li and Kevin Wang won silver medals, and Theodore Liu won a bronze medal.
Canada’s second delegation to the IEO had even better results. In 2021, Canada placed 2nd overall out of 44 countries; Andy Wei, Andrew Cheng, Eric Myzelev, and Angelina Zheng picked up 4 of the 15 gold medals; and Olivia Khoroshilov won a bronze medal. Andy Wei also placed 1st overall in the individual rankings.
It seems there was little space to improve since the awesome performance in 2021, but we did it!!! At 2022 IEO Canadian team won 4 gold medals (Martin Thaw, Daniel Chen, Leo Zhu, and Olivia Kay) and a silver medal (Vikas Nibhanupudi), and Martin Thaw was the absolute winner of the IEO!!! This year was also the first time that Team Canada members came from two provinces (British Columbia and Ontario) and three metropolitan areas (Vancouver, Toronto, and Ottawa). What can we do next year?
And a great result in 2023 again. Two gold medals, two silver, and a bronze. Third team place among 48 countries. And once again our own Daniel Zhang was the absolute winner of the IEO. It is 3 times in a row that our students have taken the absolute first place!!!
In 2024, 257 contestants from 51 countries participated in the IEO. 18 gold medals were given and one student was named the absolute winner. This is the 5th time Canada participated in the IEO and, in the past, all our students won medals, we had several gold medals each year, and three years in a row the absolute winner was from the Canadian team. Of course, no one expected this to continue forever, and at some point it has to stop. But not this year!!! Once again, all our students won medals, three of those medals were gold, and our own Pranav Pathak is the absolute winner of the IEO!!! This is 4 absolute winners from Canada in a row!!!
In 2025,… Well, we will see what we can do this year…
